The law of thermodynamics can be applied equally to living and non-living things’ systems. Thermodynamics can be well represented as an intersection of physics, chemistry and biology. In biological processes, there is a randomness, disorder, chaos or loss of information, but at the same time, they can be characterized by a very high degree of structure and assembly, whether at the level of molecules or a system of organs.

“Heat can never pass from a colder to a warmer body without some other change, connected therewith, occurring at the same time.”– Rudolf Clausius, (1854).

Entropy

Entropy is a measure of disorder in any system or organ, and it usually increases steadily if left non-intervened. A cell, organ, system or individual death is always the thermodynamically preferred state because there is a large increase in the entropy as the molecular structure of a system proceeds to chaos or randomness. Every isolated system in the universe moves toward a state of maximum entropy. The strongest component that continues life is energy. Living things preserve their low levels of entropy throughout time because they receive energy from their surroundings in the form of nutrition and medicine. They gain their order at the expense of disordering the nutrients they consume.
