In the December 2019 issue of the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, Syed N. Hussain, MD, DNB, et al, shared a new method to simplify filler injections to the tear trough. The “Tick Method” involves performing three small bolus injections of hyaluronic acid in defined anatomical regions using BD insulin syringes with fixed 6mm 31G needles.
The authors treated 150 patients and assessed before-and-after images immediately following treatment and again at one week and one, three, six and 12 months following treatment. The injections were placed deep on periosteum and under the orbicularis oculi muscle. The amount of HA filler injected varied based on the grade of volume loss.
At all time points, both patients and physicians rated the areas as improved. In approximately 90 percent of patients results were rated as either “very” or “exceptionally” improved. Adverse events, which all resolved by the one-month follow-up, included swelling, redness, pain and bruising. No Tyndall effect was seen at any point in the study period and no patient required removal of filler.
