Bakuchiol is well-known in the skin care industry for its anti-aging benefits to the skin. This terpenephenol is extracted from the Asian Psoralea corylifola plant. Bakuchiol has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-tumor activity," said Dr. Alisar S. Zahr, director of research and clinical development at Revision Skincare. Generally, bakuchiol is used as an alternative to retinol in skin care, with similar results and less irritation.
Bakuchiol helps to treat fine lines and wrinkles while also being able to help even the appearance of skin pigmentation and improve elasticity and firmness; this ingredient has also shown in clinical studies to aid with acne, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and psoriasis. Bakuchiol appears to stimulate the leukocytes in the skin for anti-inflammatory responses and also act as an antimicrobial agent," said Dave Milora, VP of research and development for TiZO. Zahr continues to explain how in clinical studies, this ingredient has been shown to suppress the growth of pathogenic bacteria often associated with acne and psoriasis, and it more specifically suppresses the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. She furthers with how bakuchiol has demonstrated its ability to inhibit transfer of melanin from melanocytes to keratinocytes.
