Patients with resistant androgenic alopecia may benefit from combination platelet-rich plasma and platelet gel injections. Elaheh Lotfi, MD, Najmeh Aramianpour, MD, and Bahareh Salehi, MD, published the results of their case series in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (April 5, 2022).

They treated eight patients suffering from resistant androgenic alopecia with 10 cc of a combination of PRP and platelet gel, which was injected in the scalp in androgen-related areas using a 23-gauge syringe. Patients underwent three treatments, spaced one and then three months apart.

The investigators evaluated outcomes at three, six and nine months after treatment by hair pull test, dermoscopy, photography and patient satisfaction ratings.

The observed a significant reduction in hair loss following treatment. Hair count (density) increased from average number of 72 hair/cm2 to 210 hair/cm2. The hair diameter significantly increased before and after treatment for all patients and, after the treatment, the pull test was significantly decreased in all eight patients.
