Before joining the faculty in 1995, Professor Hymel worked as a Certified Public Accountant and a Tax Attorney. She received a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a juris doctorate from the University of Texas. Her experience includes 8 years of both auditing and tax practice with Ernst & Young and several fortune 500 companies in federal tax planning. After law school, Professor Hymel worked for the law firm of King and Spalding in tax transactional work involving the most well-known U.S. companies. Since joining the law faculty, Professor Hymel has published several books on accounting and finance for lawyers. She also teaches Federal Income Taxation; LLP, LLC, and Partnership Taxation (pass-through entities); Accounting and Finance for Lawyers and Federal Tax Policy. Professor Hymel has also taught U.S. Corporate Taxation; Australian Corporate Law; U.S. Corporate Law; Estates and Trusts; and Ethics. Her research and writing primarily focuses on United States environmental taxation, specifically the use of subsidies to achieve environmental outcomes. Professor Hymel also writes and publishes in the areas of Accounting/Finance and Legal Ethics. Currently, she also serves as the Chair of the University of Arizona Faculty Senate (2022-2024).
