Three treatments with a fractional radiofrequency (RF) microneedle device can improve skin texture on the hands and may offer some improvement in volume, as shown in a March 29, 2022 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.

Researchers at the Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China, enrolled 16 subjects for the self-controlled evaluator-blind prospective trial. All subjects received three fractional RF microneedling treatments, spaced four weeks apart. They were treated on one hand with other hand acting as control.
Changes in hand volume were evaluated through both subjective (Hand Volume Rating Scale) and quantitative measurements. The researchers also assessed aesthetic improvement using the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (digital photographs). Patients were followed up at one, three and six months following the last treatment.

There was statistically significant improvement on both the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale and Hand Rating Volume Scale. Compared with the control side, the treated hands showed a mean 44% improvement in dorsal skin surface roughness. Quantitative measurements of hand volume showed a trend toward increased volume for the treated hand, but the difference was not statistically significant.
