Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are known for their healing, immunomodulation and inflammation control properties, as well as their ability to generate growth factors for matrix proteins such as collagen and elastin for better skin health and appearance. In recent years, advances in research on stem cell and stem cell derived factors has brought growing attention to exosomes. “Previously, exosomes were lumped in with extracellular vesicles (EVs), microvesicles and apoptotic bodies, but more recent research has shown that these nano sized vesicles appear to play a different role, and are generally linked to intercellular communication,” said Jordan Plews, PhD, co-founder of Elevai Labs.
He explains that not all exosomes are created equal and the key to understanding the MSC Exosome technology is understanding the cells that are creating exosomes and the conditions under which those cells need to be cultured in vitro for a specific purpose. While there are no FDA-approved clinical indications for exosomes, Dr. Plews believes the industry will eventually see exosomes targeted for all sorts of purposes. Currently, there are some exosome products on the market, including Elevai’s, that target redness and skin pigmentation related issues.
