A multi-center, open-label, prospective, study of 60 subjects injected with small-particle, hyaluronic acid gel plus lidocaine (SPHAL, Restylane Silk) using a blunt-tipped microcannula achieved significant improvement in lip fullness with no serious adverse events.
Raj Chopra MD, FACS, of the David Geffen School of Medicine, et al, treated 60 patients with a mean total volume (in both lips and optional perioral rhytids) of 2.2 mL of SPHAL. Subjects kept a diary of injection-related events for two weeks posttreatment. At 4 and 12 weeks, investigators and subjects reported improvement in lip fullness using the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) and Medicis Lip Fullness Scale (MLFS).
Treatment-emergent adverse events were mild and transient in nature and included injection site swelling (13.3 percent), injection site bruising (6.7 percent) and injection site pain (1.7 percent). There were no serious adverse events in the 12 weeks following treatment. At 4 and 12 weeks, both investigators and subjects reported clinically significant improvement in lip fullness using the GAIS and MLFS.
